Our story.......

Occupational Therapy Action

Hello I’m Anne. I am the lead Occupational Therapist at Occupational Therapy Action (OT Action) based just outside of Exeter in Devon. It’s usually me that you will speak to initially about a case. After 3 years of study which included placements within older persons’ day hospital, mental health teams (both adult and adolescent psychiatry) and within social services, I qualified in 1996 from Oxford Brooks University, with a BSc (Hons) 2:1 classification in occupational therapy.
After graduation I first worked as an occupational therapist in Whipps Cross Hospital, London initially on the general medical wards, and then working within the hand therapy and adult mental health teams.
Then I travelled to New Zealand where I worked in Christchurch Hospital in the community team (assessing for equipment and adaptations).
Returning to England, I worked within Social Services in Enfield, London. My main roles focused on urgent moving and handling assessments, provision of equipment and assessing for and guiding people through the disabled facilities grant (DFG) process for adaptations to meet their long term needs. All of this before heading into private practise!
OT Action was formed in 2002 and our main role initially was providing independent OT services to the Mobility Bureau (founded by the 70’s pop group The Dooleys), who at the time were providing equipment for charities & benevolent funds nationwide, in particular the Royal British Legion. We provided the occupational therapist and we would travel all over the country assessing clients for a whole range of equipment from specialised wheelchairs to bathroom transformations. I even got to meet a famous politician!!
As OT Action developed, we had several OTs join us. We worked with various local authorities, helping to reduce waiting lists. We developed our own Moving and Handling training courses for care homes, nursing homes and care agencies. Outside of these areas we have worked with housing associations and numerous charities and benevolent funds around the UK providing OT services.
Perhaps one of my personal highlights was finding myself modelling for a wheelchair marketing brochure for Invacare a well known manufacturer in a rather sumptuous location in the Gower in Wales. If you look hard enough you might spot me in the video. I was supposed to be there for consultation but ended up in the video!
I have had years of experience in the NHS, Social Services & in private practise. I am very experienced in wheelchair assessments, seating, adaptations, local authority contracts, equipment and manual handling training. I have worked over the years with many of the leading equipment manufacturers and I know the industry well. The good and the bad!
If we can help you or your organisation in any way, then please get in touch. Hopefully you will find us interested, involved and incredibly caring. We always try to go that extra mile if needed and that I promise is not a sales pitch!
